Itchy Cast, Surviving Kaiser
Back in 2012 I had to avoid some pedestrians and ended up breaking some bones. Then I had to survive Kaiser, this is my story. This was at Eye on the Ball, and the crosswalk hadn't been created yet and the guard rail wasn't yet opened up, and I saw two people in the road and slowly went around them. Unfortunately for me, on the outside of that turn is a bump and I lost my brakes and went into the dirt. I looked ahead and saw the new posts with the steel cables coming and hit the dirt and broke the shoulder, then I slid into the post and all the force went into my right wrist and it broke. The bike was fine though! The people in the road were physical therapists from Sausalito. I walked back to SF, and then took a taxi to Kaiser. This was my first experience using my healthcare and thought it would be easy. But they almost killed me. At first they reduced the fracture and put on a full cast and wrapped it with two ace bandages. It weighed about 7 pounds, and that was slung off my broken shoulder. They gave me Tylenol, 4gm/day. On the second day I realized I was only taking the Tylenol because of how they had set this up. I researched online with my two functional fingers and found out they were not following standard medical practices, which was strange. I stopped the Tylenol, and then went in to have the first cast removed and the second one put on, and right away my pulse went over 100 bpm and my temperate went to 102. That's when they put the second cast on wrong, intentionally I'm sure. I tried to get a second opinion but they refused. I tried UCSF and it took a week to get an appointment, I ended up in the Kaiser emergency room, and it was a joke. There were about 8 guys huddled around a counter like a bunch of shoe salesmen at Macy's, and then they brought in the "psych" nurse to say it was all in my head. I realized then that my fever was because my body was fighting the infection on my side from the crash and the Tylenol was preventing my body from developing a fever to fight it, I could have had sepsis. Eventually I got into UCSF and they told me I needed surgery right away :( I went back to Kaiser and they reset the fracture again and put on the cast correctly, but then my arm was in the cast an extra two weeks. This cost me over $10K, even with insurance. The video shows how I managed to survive and keep the arm clean and not itching.
